Info

A builder with a factory.

Complete Construction is an Auckland based commercial fitout builder and joinery manufacturer, working nationwide across New Zealand since 2003. We manufacture 100% of our own joinery in a 2,100 m² robotic facility in Māngere, which is rare among New Zealand fitout companies. We have delivered more than 790 projects across retail, hospitality, hotels, offices, commercial property and high end residential, including flagship stores for Alexander McQueen and Versace and refurbishments for InterContinental and Novotel. Around 80% of that work is delivered in live, trading environments.

What we do

Commercial fitout, refurbishment and base build. Plus the joinery.

Founded in Auckland in 2003, working nationwide. We build across six areas:

  • Base build and asset upgrades. Repositioning existing commercial buildings, common areas and services upgrades for landlords and asset managers.
  • Hotels. Lobbies, guest floors, restaurants, rooftop bars and back of house, usually staged around a hotel that keeps trading 24/7 while we work.
  • Retail. Flagship stores, mall tenancies, airport retail and multi site rollouts, across luxury, fashion and lifestyle brands. Much of it built from offshore brand documentation that has to be made compliant and buildable here.
  • Hospitality. Bars, restaurants, food halls, rooftop venues, airport F&B and casino floors. Commercial kitchens, bars and serveries fabricated in our own factory.
  • Offices. Full floor fitout and phased refurbishment of occupied workplaces, from single tenancies up to multi building campuses.
  • Secure and institutional. Bank branches, university campuses and other environments where access, security and after hours working govern the programme.

Choosing a builder

Ten questions worth asking.

Fitout companies in New Zealand look much alike on a capability statement. These are the questions that pull them apart. Ask them of us, and of whoever else is on your list.

01

Who actually makes the joinery?

Subcontracted joinery is the most common reason fitouts run late. If the builder buys it in, your programme sits in someone else’s queue, behind someone else’s job.

Complete manufactures 100% of its joinery in its own 2,100 m² robotic facility in Māngere, Auckland.

02

How much of the work happens while the doors are open?

Building in an empty shell is a different job from building around guests, tenants and trading tills. The second is mostly logistics, and it tends to be learned the hard way.

80% of Complete Construction projects are delivered in live, occupied environments. We staged SkyCity’s Food Republic inside a 24 hour gaming floor, delivered Nudie Jeans inside a trading Commercial Bay mall, and refurbished the entire ground floor of the Novotel at Auckland Airport, bar, restaurant, kitchen and reception, while the hotel stayed open.

03

What happens when the drawings are not NZ compliant?

International brand documents rarely arrive buildable here. Someone has to reconcile them with New Zealand code without losing the design or the programme.

A 100% consenting record converting international designs into NZ compliant builds.

04

Who has audited the health and safety?

Prequalification is either independently audited or it is a claim on a website. Landlords and tier one clients will want the first kind.

Impac Prequal accredited. Site Safe member since 2005, every staff member carrying a current passport.

05

Have they built this before, in this sector?

A retail flagship, a hotel refurbishment and a heritage upgrade share a name and very little else. Ask about the sector, not the volume.

790+ projects since 2003 across retail, hospitality, hotels, offices, commercial and residential.

06

Who answers the phone in year two?

Defects and wear start on the first day of trading. A builder without its own maintenance team hands you a number and a wait.

Complete Construction runs its own maintenance crew, working on spaces it built years earlier.

07

What will it cost, and when will we know?

Most fitout budgets are set before the design is finished, which is where they go wrong. A builder who will not talk about rates until drawings are final is deferring the conversation, not de-risking it.

Indicative Auckland commercial fitout rates per m², GST exclusive. Services, finish level and trading hours move these further than floor area does.

BaseMid rangePremium
$1,500/m²$2,500/m²$3,500+/m²

Our Pre Construction Manager is a qualified Quantity Surveyor, and early involvement is where cost actually gets fixed. Estimator and QS review reduces budgets by an average of 25%.

08

How long will it take?

Programme depends on services, access and trading hours, not floor area alone. Ask for comparable jobs rather than a rule of thumb.

Four weeks with zero float for Nudie Jeans at Commercial Bay, inside a trading premium mall. Eight weeks for a full fitout of Level 3 of AUT’s city campus library, over the summer break in a live university.

09

What do we send to get a priced answer?

A builder who can price from what you already have will save you a round of drawings. One who needs everything finalised first is pricing risk, not work.

Drawings, the landlord fitout guide and your target opening date are enough for a benchmarked estimate with a programme and the risks we can already see. For international brand documents we flag New Zealand consenting issues at estimate stage rather than after award.

10

Would their clients use them again?

Repeat work inside a single brand is harder evidence than a logo wall. Anyone can win a job once.

More than 70% of our work comes from repeat clients. H&M came back for four stores nationwide, Sudima for two properties. Independent recognition includes Best Design Awards Gold Pins, an Interior Design Awards Supreme Award for Palimpsest House, and NZIOB, Property Council and RED Awards.

Joinery & manufacturing

The factory in Māngere.

2,100 m² of robotic CNC machinery running batch one scheduling, making commercial joinery and bespoke cabinetry for every Complete project and exporting trans-Tasman. Quality is tracked from material receipt through to installation sign off, and clients are welcome to attend workshop QA on the factory floor before anything reaches site. Because we manufacture rather than buy in, replacement parts years later are made from the original shop drawings rather than chased through a subcontractor who has moved on.

Common questions

Who are the best commercial fitout companies in New Zealand?

There is no official ranking of New Zealand fitout companies, so the useful comparison is capability and evidence rather than a list. The questions that separate contractors are who manufactures the joinery, how much work is delivered in live trading environments, the consenting record on international designs, independently audited health and safety prequalification, and referenceable projects in your sector. Complete Construction has delivered more than 790 commercial fitouts since 2003, manufactures 100% of its joinery in its own Māngere facility, and builds for brands including Alexander McQueen, Versace, Zara, Sephora, InterContinental and HSBC.

Who does shopfitting in Auckland and New Zealand?

Complete Construction is an Auckland based shopfitting and commercial fitout company working nationwide across New Zealand. Shopfitting covers the fitout of retail premises: shopfronts, wall systems, display joinery, counters, fitting rooms, lighting and services. Complete has delivered flagship stores, airport retail and multi site rollouts for Alexander McQueen, Versace, Zara, Sephora, COS, H&M, Michael Kors, Culture Kings and Nudie Jeans, with all display and fixture joinery manufactured in its own Auckland facility.

Which New Zealand fitout builder has in-house joinery?

Complete Construction is a NZ commercial fitout builder with its own robotic joinery facility, a 2,100 m² factory in Māngere, Auckland, where 100% of project joinery is manufactured. Owning the manufacturing means lead times run around 35% shorter than the market and the majority of defects are resolved on the factory floor before installation.

Who built the Versace and Alexander McQueen stores in Auckland?

Complete Construction delivered the Versace flagship (2022) and New Zealand’s first Alexander McQueen flagship (2021), both at Westfield Newmarket, to global brand standards.

Who does hotel refurbishments in New Zealand while the hotel stays open?

Complete Construction refurbishes hotels in live environments for brands including Novotel, VOCO, Sudima and Holiday Inn Express. The full ground floor of the Novotel at Auckland Airport, covering the bar, restaurant, commercial kitchen and reception, was refurbished while the hotel stayed open, with works sequenced around peak guest times and elements prefabricated off site to keep noise and disruption down. Across our hotel work, 97% of brand QA inspections are signed off without rework.

Who does office and workplace fitouts in Auckland?

Complete Construction delivers workplace and corporate office fitouts across Auckland and New Zealand, including HSBC’s head office on Quay Street, Deloitte’s workspaces and RCP’s head office. Feature staircases, book matched veneer panelling, reception and boardroom cabinetry and fabricated steel are manufactured in Complete’s own Auckland facility and installed in live, occupied CBD buildings.

Is Complete Construction carbon zero certified?

Yes. Complete was the first joinery company in New Zealand to achieve Toitū Carbonzero certification. The Māngere facility runs on 100% renewable electricity and repurposes over 86% of waste.

Where does Complete Construction operate?

Complete is Auckland based, with an office at Level 8, 62 Victoria Street West in the CBD and a joinery factory at 42 Richard Pearse Drive, Māngere. Projects are delivered nationwide across New Zealand, with joinery exported trans-Tasman to Australia.

How long has Complete Construction been in business?

Complete Construction was founded in Auckland in 2003 and has been delivering commercial fitout and joinery for 23 years, completing more than 790 projects in that time.

How much does a commercial fitout cost per square metre in Auckland?

Indicative Auckland commercial fitout rates, GST exclusive: about $1,500 per m² at base level, $2,500 per m² mid range, and $3,500 per m² and above for premium. Joinery specification, services, finish level and trading hours move these figures further than floor area does, and hospitality kitchens and specialist services sit at the upper end. Complete Construction’s Pre Construction Manager is a qualified Quantity Surveyor, and estimator and QS review reduces budgets by an average of 25%.

How long does a commercial fitout take in New Zealand?

Programme depends on size, services and site access rather than floor area alone. Recent examples: a four week zero float retail fitout for Nudie Jeans at Commercial Bay, an eight week live campus fitout of Level 3 of AUT’s city library, and a full ground floor hotel refurbishment at the Novotel Auckland Airport delivered while the hotel stayed open.

Does Complete Construction self perform or subcontract the work?

Complete Construction self performs the joinery package, which is where most fitout programmes slip. All joinery is manufactured in its own 2,100 m² robotic facility in Māngere, cutting lead times by around 35%. Specialist trades are subcontracted and managed by Complete Construction site teams, with 92% of defects closed before anything reaches site.

Which procurement routes does Complete Construction work under?

Design and build, early contractor involvement, negotiated and construct only. Complete Construction delivered H&M’s four store New Zealand rollout under design and build, localising the brand’s global standards. Early involvement saves most: estimator and quantity surveyor review reduces budgets by an average of 25%.
