Overview

Building a modern extension onto a protected heritage building in the Auckland CBD is one of the harder jobs in commercial construction. Complete Construction did exactly that at 1 Albert Street for Quattro Property Group, working with designer Ignite. We built a two level heritage extension with a new steel and timber frame, new cladding, a feature stair, and a lower level bar and theatre room, all tied into a protected heritage façade.

Key challenges

• Adding a modern two level extension against a protected heritage façade without harming the original fabric.
• Coordinating structural steel and timber inside an occupied CBD building with tight site access.
• Delivering high end hospitality and amenity spaces on the same programme as the base build.

How we solved it

We sequenced the structure carefully and brought heritage consultants in early, so the façade stayed protected while the new frame went up. Our in house joinery team built the feature stair and bar detail to millimetre tolerances. Running the base build, fitout and refurbishment as one programme kept the job moving on a live CBD site.

Outcome

The finished extension repositioned the asset for Quattro Property Group. It won the NZIOB Commercial Project Award and a Property Council Excellence Award. 1 Albert Street shows how Complete Construction handles heritage extensions and high end commercial fitout in central Auckland.
